We are seeking funding from the Edith M Ellis Chartiable Trust in order to financially support the forcibly displaced individuals who work with our organization as language tutors. As a non-profit, all money goes directly to the growth of our organization, as well as these individuals from around the world.

Conversations Unbound is a non-profit that pairs students who are learning Spanish, French, Arabic, or German with people who are fluent in those languages and have been forcibly displaced. Together, they have one-on-one online conversation sessions. This provides forcibly displaced people with an opportunity to earn some income, while giving students the chance to practice their foreign conversation skills. More importantly, it’s about shifting power. Displaced people are placed in a position of power as they teach students their language. Rather than being on the receiving end of aid, they are the ones with knowledge and skills to share. In turn, this power shift helps students view displaced communities differently, challenging their potential biases about displaced people and helping foster cross-cultural relationships.

Our organization builds bridges of connection globally between university students and forcibly displaced communities through paid online conversations of language practice and cultural exchange.These interactions fight harmful stereotypes of xenophobia and increase global awareness, while creating financial opportunities for displaced individuals to increase their agency and shifting the power dynamic of giver-receiver that often surrounds displaced communities.

As the number of forcibly displaced people globally continues to grow, we hope to continue to expand our reach to new university partnerships, which will provide more paid opportunities for displaced communities. This will increase the points of global, intercultural connection, and expand global awareness. Additionally, we will continue to work to secure annual funding, which will secure paid positions for Senior Administrators to ensure the continuation of institutional knowledge, allowing the organization to grow.

The organization has a detailed Mission Statement, and Vision and Strategy plan. This is overseen by a Board of Directors who advise and support the Executive Director, Finance Manager, and Program Manager in their actions. A yearly Fiscal Report is archived at the end of each year. Additionally, we gather feedback from tutors, students, and university administrators. This feedback is reviewed bi-annually, and used to refine our processes.

Conversations Unbound empowers forcibly displaced individuals by connecting them with dignified financial opportunities as language tutors, thereby increasing their personal agency. Tutors provide students with invaluable, primary-source knowledge of their respective languages and cultures, fostering meaningful conversations that bridge gaps between diverse communities. This exchange shifts harmful power dynamics of displacement by reversing the traditional giver-receiver stereotypes.
