We are seeking a grant of £5,000 to support the development and launch of a UK-wide Sexual Harassment Prevention Initiative for the ocean science and conservation sector. This funding will help us create an online resource hub, develop a sector-specific training course, and co-design safety guidelines in partnership with UK institutions. The initiative will improve safety, retention, and inclusion for women in marine and climate science by creating a safer working environment for women.

The Sexual Harassment Prevention Initiative 'Safer Ocean' is a UK-based programme developed by Women in Ocean Science to address the systemic issue of sexual harassment in the marine and environmental sciences sector. While much attention has been given to equality in representation, far less focus has been placed on the everyday safety and lived experiences of women working in climate and conservation science. This initiative directly responds to a critical gap in institutional practice, cultural awareness, and professional training. In our 2023 survey, conducted with over 700 women in marine science, 78% reported experiencing sexual harassment in a professional or academic setting. This includes unwanted comments, inappropriate behaviour in field environments, and experiences of power-based abuse within research teams. Many participants highlighted a lack of clear reporting pathways, uncertainty about consequences, and a culture of silence or dismissal from senior colleagues. These experiences are not only harmful on a personal level—they drive skilled women out of a sector that urgently needs them. This project is designed to support those most at risk—students, early-career scientists, and field researchers—by providing them with the tools, knowledge, and institutional support they need to feel safe, empowered, and heard. We also aim to equip institutions with practical, sector-specific frameworks to create safer environments for their staff, students, and collaborators. The initiative will consist of five key components: 1) An online hub offering free guidance, reporting tools, safety resources, and peer-led support for women working in ocean and environmental science; 2) A sector-specific sexual harassment training course, tailored to lab, academic, and field settings, co-designed with safeguarding professionals and women in science; 3) Practical fieldwork and institutional guidelines, developed in consultation with UK universities, research bodies, and conservation organisations; 4) Pilot partnerships with at least three UK-based institutions to implement and refine the training and resources; 5) Project coordination and outreach, to manage delivery, partnerships, and evaluation of impact. The impact of this initiative will be both immediate and long-term. In the short term, the programme will increase access to support for women who currently feel isolated and unsafe in their work. It will also provide institutions with clear, evidence-based tools to foster a culture of accountability and care—moving beyond vague policies toward meaningful, practical action. In the long term, the initiative aims to shift sector culture, embedding safety, inclusion, and justice into the foundations of climate and marine science. We see this as a vital form of peace-building: addressing harm, preventing conflict, and promoting fairness in spaces where knowledge, innovation, and planetary protection are being shaped. Harassment is not just a personal issue—it is a systemic barrier to participation in global climate work. By supporting this initiative, the Edith M Ellis 1985 Charitable Trust would be contributing to the transformation of a vital part of the climate sector. This is peace work connected with climate breakdown in its most immediate form: ensuring that women who are striving to protect the ocean and the planet are protected themselves. This project is rooted in the values of justice, equity, and shared responsibility. It is co-designed with those most affected, and led by a trusted charity with deep connections in the sector. Following initial funding, we will scale the initiative through institutional partnerships, embedding training and guidelines within university and organisational frameworks. We plan to secure further support through strategic grants, sponsorships, and in-kind contributions from the sector. By developing replicable, open-access resources and piloting with UK institutions, we aim to create a sustainable, low-cost model that can be maintained, adapted, and expanded across the marine and climate science community over time.
