We are actively seeking funding to assist Project Khthon in its mission to identify mass graves in conflict zones through the use of Open-Source Intelligence and satellite imagery. The funding will allow us to upgrade the satellite imagery technology we are using through which we can expand our research capacity in order to effect meaningful change in post-conflict regions.

In many conflict zones, mass graves are deliberately concealed to hide evidence of war crimes. These graves often contain the remains of civilians who have suffered violence, torture, or genocide. Finding and documenting these sites is critical not only for holding perpetrators accountable but also for providing closure to families of the deceased. However, traditional methods of locating these graves are often dangerous and slow, especially in areas where access is restricted. Project Khthon addresses these challenges by using OSINT and satellite imagery to remotely detect mass graves, even in inaccessible areas. This technology allows us to work safely, quickly, and effectively, uncovering sites that might otherwise remain hidden for years. Project Khthon is designed to bring about lasting change in three main areas: Justice and Accountability Our work contributes critical evidence to international organizations such as the International Committee for Missing Persons (ICMP), the United Nations, and the International Criminal Court (ICC). These bodies rely on verified data to support investigations into war crimes, human rights violations, and genocide. By providing this evidence, we help ensure that those responsible for atrocities are held accountable and that impunity is reduced. Closure for Families and Communities Families of missing persons often live with the pain of uncertainty. By identifying mass graves, we offer these families answers about their loved ones' fates, helping them begin the process of closure. When remains can be identified, this allows for dignified burials and the performance of important cultural rites. This not only helps grieving families heal but also fosters reconciliation and healing within communities affected by conflict. Long-Term Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution Our work supports long-term peacebuilding by exposing the truth about mass killings and holding perpetrators accountable. Acknowledging past atrocities is essential for fostering trust, reconciliation, and healing in post-conflict regions. By documenting these crimes, we ensure that the voices of victims are heard, helping prevent cycles of violence and promoting stability in war-torn regions. Who Will Benefit? The primary beneficiaries of our work are the families of missing persons, who gain knowledge about their loved ones and can start the healing process. Communities benefit from the justice and accountability that arise from uncovering mass graves, as well as from the peacebuilding efforts that follow. Additionally, international organizations like the ICC and the UN benefit from the evidence we provide, strengthening their investigations into war crimes and human rights violations. In order to guarantee the project's sustainability beyond the initial funding period, we intend to submit further applications for grants from organisations that promote technological innovation, peacebuilding, and human rights. Our objective is to maintain and expand our impact by attracting long-term donors and utilising in-kind support, such as pro bono satellite data and OSINT tools, as we establish a more robust track record of successful outcomes.
