The most serious problem for the people of Todonyang in Turkana, northern Kenya during the last decades has been the recurring droughts that lead to famine and endemic poverty. This leads to tribal conflict between the Turkana and the Dassannech and Nyangatom who live across the border in Ethiopia. By encouraging increased attendance at the nursery school in Todonyang by Dassannech and Nyangatom children there is hope that this will lead to reduced future conflicts.

Turkana is an arid area about the size of Ireland with a population of around 800,000 mostly semi-nomadic tribes-people, called the Turkana. According to the Ministry of National Planning and Development, Turkana County is the poorest in Kenya with a poverty index of 94.9%. It is characterised by low and highly variable rainfall patterns, poor soils, geographical isolation, food insecurity and general marginalisation. Infant mortality is at 6% and maternal mortality is at 1.5%., three times the national mortality rate. The doctor patient ratio remains very far from the recommended 1:1,000 at 1:52,434. Turkana North is a drought prone area that experiences recurrent, prolonged droughts and cross border cattle rustling conflicts, resulting in heavy losses of livestock - the major source of livelihood. Persistent droughts since the 1960s have led to food and fodder scarcity and famine. When water is scarce for prolonged periods the animal population can be decimated and the people suffer malnutrition and starvation. Only 62% of the population have regular access to clean drinking water. These circumstances have led to regular and prolonged conflict over scarce resources between the Turkana and both the Dassannech and Nyangatom people who live over the border in Ethiopia. The Turkana have a history of conflict with both along the Kibish corridor. The nursery school at Todonyang Integrated Centre, close to the border, are developing new ways aimed at long term conflict resolution. In the last 16 years, with the establishment of the school there has been some progress amidst the conflict. The establishment of an integrated school has brought hope for a better future. However continued periods of conflict between the communities hampers real development for all. This project will work towards a change of mindset and character of Turkana, Dassannech, and Nyangatom children attending the school so that they have a positive opinion of each other. This in turn will help the families and wider communities to view each other more positively. Currently there is only 3 Dassannech pupils and 6 Nyangatom pupils due to mistrust towards education in general and specifically at the school at Todonyang. There are currently 42 children in the nursery school. We want to significantly increase the number of Dassannech and Nyangatom children attending the school. The focus of the project is to extend and improve mobilisation to encourage more parents, from both Nyangatom and Dassannech to send their children to the school. This will have the normal benefits of education for the children but the mixing of the children along with Turkana children as a result of their common shared education will in the long-term help to change attitudes, increase understanding, and make conflicts in the long term less likely. It will increase cross border trading, improving livelihoods and standards of living for all. Having children from Turkana, with more from Nyangatom and Dassannech at school together will create an atmosphere of confidence and positivity towards building a long-term peace from all sides. With the small numbers of children already attending, it shows that there is some trust and confidence but there is much more to do to attract more pupils. That would allow the children to grow up together creating socio-cultural bonds among them, establishing them as ambassadors of peace in their own communities. The school will enable all the children to reach their full potential and ultimately give back to their communities. It will improve the education and nutrition of the children providing three meals a day. A good quality education is the key to their empowerment and to enable them to take responsibilities for their families in the long term, reducing conflicts.

There have been decades of conflict between the Turkana and both the Dassanech and Nyangatom. By integrating more Dassanech and Nyangatom children into the Todonyang school and increasing their numbers from 9 to 20 this will establish closer links, increase trust, encourage more interaction, and increase border crossings on both sides. This will help to resolve conflict and build peace.

There will be no ongoing recruitment costs of children. There will be ongoing costs of educating the children. Families will be encouraged to make a contribution towards the costs of educating their child. This is currently the case with the Turkana and other children. If a family is not in a position to do so, payment is sometimes accepted in goats or other in-kind means. There will be scholarships available to some of the children.

Our local partner, based in Turkana for over 35 years, will monitor and manage the project to ensure completion within budget. Locally all payments are checked and appropriate records are kept. In London we review the expenditure to ensure that it is appropriate and within budget having received the appropriate data. 6 monthly reports will be provided to show progress with the recruitment of the children, their progress, and information on relations between communities.

New Ways was established in 1994, supporting nutrition, health, education, water and agricultural development projects in Northern Kenya, Ethiopia, Malawi and South Sudan. We focus on sustainable projects that provide a basis for long-term development, mostly in areas that are particularly deprived.
